<< ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL

THEN: 16
The undisputed king of Geekdom in the 1980s - and it came thanks by and large to just three of the films he featured in, three JOHN HUGHES films - SIXTEEN CANDLES (1984), as 'The Geek' who manages to obtain MOLLY RINGWALD's undies, WEIRD SCIENCE (1985) as Gary Wallace, one of two nerds who manage to create their dream woman, and THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985) as Brian Johnson aka The Brain who manages to survive detention. Before all that he was the original Rusty Griswold alongside CHEVY CHASE in VACATION (1983). Anthony started to finally grow up in the late '80s and his roles - and his career - changed. Playing WINONA RYDER's big bad boyfriend Jim in EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990) was his last major part for some time.

Did you know without trigonometry, there'd be no engineering?

NOW: 41
Anthony had some problems towards the end of the '80s, and it wasn't just because of the flop JOHNNY BE GOOD (1988). He apprently hit the booze and hit it hard. Withdrawing his services from the lead role of STANLEY KUBRICK's FULL METAL JACKET (1987) did not help his career. Anthony made somewhat of a return to the spotlight though by returning to his nerdish roots playing BILL GATES in the critically-acclaimed THE PIRATES OF SILICON VALLEY (1999). He then got his own sci-fi/drama TV series, THE DEAD ZONE (2002-07). More recently, his star has continued to rise again after he was in only the biggest movie of the past decade, THE DARK KNIGHT (2008). He's next seen in AFTERMATH (2010).

I'm always baffled by actors who are like, 'I'm not going to talk about the '80s.' What? You're just forgetting that whole experience? I feel very fortunate to have been able to do those films. It gave me the tools I needed to be where I am - A.M. Hall
